“In Arizona, as in many other states, campaign finance laws are in place to prevent individuals and organizations from illegally influencing elections. However, some individuals have allegedly used a practice known as straw donations or conduit contributions to funnel large amounts of money to political campaigns while avoiding disclosure requirements and contribution limits.

These individuals are often referred to as ‘smurfs’ and there is reportedly a list of the top 100 names that have been used to make such donations in Arizona. Many of these names have been used to make thousands of donations totaling tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, it is important to note that these allegations have not been proven in court.

The consequences of being caught making straw donations can be severe and can include fines, imprisonment, and damage to one’s reputation. Candidates who receive such donations can also face legal consequences and have their campaigns tarnished by the controversy.”
